Recently, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration released the Directory of Important Habitats for Terrestrial Wildlife (the first batch), which included habitats for migratory birds of the East Liangzihu Wetland in Ezhou city.
In recent years, Ezhou city has strengthened the protection of endangered and rare waterfowl habitats and Liangzihu ecological reservation by restoring wetland ecology, reinforcing patrol monitoring, improving the law enforcement system, and carrying out science popularization and education, so that the original shallow water area and mudflat have become a wetland with lush water plants and rich biodiversity, providing a good habitat for birds.
To ensure that a large number of migratory birds can safely overwinter in the East Liangzihu Wetland, measures have been taken by Ezhou's forestry department, for example establishing a waterfowl-investigation team to carry out 24-hour patrol and monitoring; conducting monitoring on birds once a week and releasing monthly related reports to grasp the waterfowl’s information of migration time, quantity, habitat, providing guidance and basis data for the protection. Furthermore, an ecological comprehensive law enforcement mechanism has been established in collaboration with public security, agriculture and ecological environment departments to carry out specific law enforcement actions such as wildlife protection, comprehensive fishing bans, and crackdown on illegal trade in wild animals and plants at least twice a year. And those who conduct illegal activities that harm wetland ecology and wildlife resources has been strictly punished. Together with theme activities such as World Wetland Day, World Wildlife Day, and Bird-Loving Week, the city has carried out waterfowl science popularization and education to enhance the public awareness of bird protection, thus fostering a positive trend of protecting wildlife and ecological civilization in the whole society.
